Try out your future career with a traineeship.

Taking a gap year? Try a traineeship.

Last November, hundreds of thousands of Year 12 students across Australia celebrated the end of their school years. For some, the path forward is crystal clear; go to uni or do a course, travel, find a job or maybe even do an apprenticeship.

Others might find themselves at a crossroads, still unsure of which direction to take in their career. If you fall in this group, it might be worth considering a traineeship gap year.

A gap year is a break from your academic studies to help you figure out who you are and what you want to do with your life. It’s a popular choice for school leavers in Australia, with recent data estimating that between 10 and 15% of Australians opt for a gap year after graduating high school.

Taking a gap year is a great opportunity to see what’s out there and try new things, before making any big decisions about the future. Instead of travelling or finding a job, a traineeship gap year allows you to try on a career path of interest to see if it’s the right fit. You also benefit from:

  • paid employment for the duration of the traineeship (usually 12-24 months depending on the vocation)
  • on the job experience
  • a qualification in 1-2 years
  • pathway to a potential full-time role with your employer upon completion
  • relevant skills and experience that will give you a leg-up in the competitive job market.

There are approximately 500 types of traineeships you can do in Australia depending on your interests, from white collar roles like Business, Information Technology, Individual Support, Retail and Human Resources, to more hands-on career paths like Conservation & Land Management, Civil Construction, and Supply Chain Operations (warehousing).

By taking a traineeship gap year, you can explore possible career options before making a long-term commitment. Who knows, it could end up being a life-changing experience?

Zeal Futures is currently recruiting for a variety of traineeships across NSW. Head to our vacancies page to explore what’s on offer.
