Are There Incentives for Hosting an Apprentice?

.

There are many funding and incentive programs available within the Australian and New South Wales Governments, appealing to employers and apprentices. Based on the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List, you can find out what incentives you’re eligible for today.

Apprenticeships play a crucial role in developing a skilled and sustainable workforce, and both the Australian and NSW Governments offer a range of financial incentives to support employers who engage apprentices with their business. These programs are designed to make it easier for businesses to grow their teams while advancing national and state skills priorities. If you’re thinking about bringing an apprentice into your business, Zeal Futures can help guide you through available apprenticeship partnerships and match you with the right candidates.

By understanding the incentives available, employers can make informed decisions, maximise the support available, and create strong pathways for new talent entering their industry.

What is the Priority List?

The Australian Apprenticeships Priority List is a curated list of occupations that the government has identified as having strong demand but experiencing a shortage of employees. Apprentices and trainees undertaking a Certificate III or higher qualification in Priority List occupations are eligible (at the time of commencement) for enhanced incentives to support them in completing their training and for employers to take on trainees, ensuring the listed occupations remain prepared.

Australian Government Employer Incentives

The Australian Government offers a range of financial incentives to employers and apprentices, each designed to encourage businesses to take on apprentices and trainees. While most incentives don’t apply to all professions, they do apply to apprenticeships in occupations listed on the Priority list.

These incentives reduce costs of onboarding, training, and support, particularly in industries facing skill shortages. It also ensures that employers have access to the skilled workforce they need for long-term growth. Below are some of Australia’s Government employer incentives.

Priority Hiring Incentive (employer payment) is a hiring incentive paid to employers of Australian Apprentices in priority occupations. Check the national Priority List for eligibility. The purpose of this program is to incentivise entry into occupations with employment shortages by offering up to $2,500 in the first year for full-time positions and $1,250 for part-time positions.

Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support is an ongoing wage support payment to businesses that employ an apprentice with a disability to offset additional costs and encourage participation.

Key Apprenticeship Program (KAP) is designed to support apprentices in new energy and housing construction streams. This funding is available to employers where the Australian apprentice meets the eligibility and undertakes a Certificate III or above qualification from the Australian Apprenticeships Priority List in clean energy or a housing construction pathway. To be eligible, the employer must provide evidence that they have the capacity to deliver meaningful work experience and training in the relevant sector. Employer incentives are $5,000 for full-time apprentices and $2,500 for part-time apprentices in the first year.

New South Wales Employer Incentives

Alongside federal support, the NSW Government provides additional state-based incentives. These incentives further ease the financial burden for employers hosting apprentices, and all aim to make apprenticeships more accessible and cost-effective for businesses across the state. Below are some New South Wales employer incentives, but you can find more from the NSW Government here.

Smart & Skilled Training allowsNSW apprentices and trainees who commence training before 30th June 2027 to be eligible for funded training under the NSW Government's fee-free apprenticeship initiative. This initiative currently covers the RTO enrolment fees for new apprentices and trainees and will be reviewed by the NSW Government prior to the end of June 2027.

Zeal Futures supports NSW businesses in navigating state-based incentives and easing the process of taking on apprentices. Send us an enquiry to start searching for your next apprentice.
